The scientific name of this beautifull flower is Dendranthema indicum.
The chrysanthemum is a native crop in some parts of China, circ. 500 BC.
Confucius mentioned the chrysanthemum several times in his writings as
the most favourite flower of the Chinese noble class. Later, in the 8th
century, the chrysanthemum was brought to Japan. The Emperor was so fond
of the flower, that the Japanese
pictured a single flower with 16 beams
in the Emperor's symbol of divine authority.
The Japanese consider
chrysanthemums as a sign of long life and happiness.
In 1688 a dutchman, named Jacob Layn, introduced the chrysanthemum in
Holland. In the beginning of 1900 the cultivation of
chrysanthemums started for flowering in autumn. In 1954, by means of day
length control, All-Year-Round flowering was introduced. This technique
was allied to work which had started in the USA. This technique is still
used by the growers of today.
